The 10″ tunable hand drum is the adjustable model in our high-grade buffalo-leather line. Where a fixed frame drum is tensioned once at the factory, this one carries a chrome tension hoop and lock so the head can be re-tensioned by the player with the supplied key — and its real translucent buffalo-leather head gives the warm, dry tone that a synthetic film cannot reproduce. It shares its birch-plywood shell and leather head with the rest of the buffalo-leather range, and adds the one thing that range was missing: a drum you can tune.

Why a Tunable Head Matters

A frame drum with a fixed head is set for life at the factory. That is fine for a shelf product, but it is a problem for anyone supplying schools, music services or worship groups, where a drum that drifts out of pitch is a drum that gets written off. A tunable head changes the economics of the instrument:

In repair	Loosen the hoop and the head comes off for replacement — no need to write off the shell
In sales	A drum that can be serviced reads as a proper instrument, not a disposable toy

The trade-off is weight and height: the tension hardware adds about 2 mm to the frame compared with the fixed-head 10″ version, which is why this model measures 57 mm deep rather than 55 mm.

The Head: Real Buffalo Leather

The head is genuine translucent buffalo leather — a natural skin, deliberately left slightly translucent so the light coming through it makes the frame read as wood and hide rather than plastic. It is tensioned over a chamfered bearing edge and held by the chrome hoop, which is where the drum gets its voice: dry and warm at low volume, brighter and more articulate under the hand. Wiping it down after play keeps the surface even.

Q: How is this different from your standard 10″ hand drum?

A: Two things. The head: this is real translucent buffalo leather rather than a multi-layer composite film. The structure: this drum has a chrome tension hoop and lock, so the head can be re-tensioned or replaced, whereas the standard 10″ drum is fixed at the factory. The shell is birch plywood in both cases.

Q: Do I need a tool to tune it?

A: No — the knurled tuning knobs are worked by hand. The lock is there to hold the tension once it is set. If you want a key or wrench quoted alongside an order, tell us on your enquiry.

Q: Can the head be replaced later?

A: Yes. Release the tension hoop and the head lifts off the chamfered bearing edge, so a replacement can be fitted without a workshop. Spare heads can be quoted alongside your order.
