Early Childhood Education
RoyalSound manufactures and supplies children’s musical instruments for early childhood education — for kindergartens, preschool groups, early-years programme providers and the suppliers who serve them.
Early years is a distinct purchasing category. Instruments are chosen for small hands and short sessions, quantities are built around a whole group rather than an individual, and the safety file matters as much as the product. This page covers what changes when the buyer is an early-years setting.
What Changes in an Early-Years Purchase
Group quantities, not single units
A preschool session is a group activity. Instruments are quoted by the group, so the count per child matters more than any single model.
Sized and finished for young children
Dimensions, weight and edge finishing are specified for the age band you buy for, and non-toxic finishes are part of the product specification rather than an option.
Age-appropriate instrument types
Rhythm and percussion instruments carry most early-years work. Melodic instruments and recorders enter as children get older. The mix follows the age band.
A safety file that satisfies the setting
Early-years settings and their regulators expect product safety documentation and batch records. Reports can be issued with the shipment.
Product Types for Early Years
| Percussion & rhythm | Tambourines, hand drums, egg shakers, rhythm sticks, castanets, triangles, wrist bells and complete rhythm sets — one piece per child where the set allows |
| Small melodic | Soprano glockenspiels and small xylophones, sized for young hands and supplied in group quantities |
| Novelty & movement | Hand chimes, rain sticks and similar movement instruments used in group sessions |
| Listening | Steel tongue drums for quiet-time and listening sessions |
| Storage | Storage totes, wall-hanging bags and mobile carts that keep a group set together and movable between rooms |
| Accessories | Replacement mallets, spare bars and consumable parts, supplied as an annual line |
Age Bands and Product Specifications
Instrument selection for early years is normally organised by age band rather than by product name. Tell us the bands you teach and we will propose the instrument mix and the quantity per child for each band, with the dimensions and materials of every model listed in the quotation.
| Age band | Typical instrument focus | What to specify |
|---|---|---|
| 2–3 years | Shakers, bells, simple hand percussion | Size, weight, edge finish, non-toxic finish, minimum part count |
| 3–4 years | Percussion and rhythm sets, first hand drums | Group quantity, storage method, spare-parts line |
| 4–6 years | Soprano glockenspiels and small xylophones added | Pitch accuracy, mallet type, number of bars |
The bands above are a specification tool, not a teaching method — final selection rests with your education team and the product specification you approve.
Instrument Sets for a Preschool Room
A preschool set is usually quoted as one room, one site or one group, and can be repeated identically when a new room opens. Two common starting points:
| Single-room set | One complete percussion and rhythm set, a small melodic group, storage tote and spare mallets — the unit most settings start with |
| Multi-room set | The same bill of materials repeated per room, with per-room labelling and phased delivery as rooms open |
If your setting already holds some instruments, the set can be quoted as an addition rather than a replacement.
Safety and Compliance Documentation
Children’s instruments are a regulated category in every market we ship to, so the paperwork is prepared with the product rather than after it.
- EN 71-1/-2/-3 — EU toy safety: mechanical and physical, flammability, and migration of elements
- ASTM F963 and CPSIA — US consumer safety specification and children’s product requirements
- GB 6675 — China national toy safety standard
- REACH Annex XVII — restricted substances documentation for the EU
- Factory side — FSC chain-of-custody timber, BSCI and ICS social compliance audits, ISO 14001 environmental management
Batch test reports are issued per production lot and can be issued against your organisation’s name. Full certification detail is on the quality page.
Customisation for Early-Years Programmes
Where volume supports it, early-years buyers can customise:
- Colourways and finishes matched to a programme or brand palette
- Set contents — your own combination of instruments and quantities per group
- Storage and packaging labelled with your organisation’s name and language
- Printed materials — songbooks, labels and teacher notes, kitted into each room pack
Feasibility depends on the product selected, tooling requirements and order volume. See OEM & ODM manufacturing for the full customisation scope.
